"Forget the past, just look towards the future"

People say that all the time. And I will have to agree to a certain extent but there is one thing though.
How do you actually FORGET the past? I've tried so hard to forget but I've realized that you really can't (losing your memory is of course an exception). Not only that you can't forget, you shouldn't. Because your past made you who you are today and every action and mistake that you made molded you to be the person you are right now. Every disappointment and every heartache were meant for something. Everyone along the way who brought smile and tears to you stood for something. Every bit and pieces of the past is a part of the puzzle. Hence, how can you forget?
Forgetting your past isn't going to help you move on and look to the future. To me, it takes you to ACKNOWLEDGE it - to come into terms that the past is over. Its just like someone who is in denial. You will continue to be that way until and unless you acknowledge it. It really isn't easy to admit that the past is over because that means its time for change and change doesn't come easy.
So, don't bother trying to forget because you're probably just trying to repress it and one day you will find that it isn't working and then you'd be frustrated with the fact that you've been trying so hard and nothing is working. Just face reality that certain things will not be the way it used to be and certain people will not be the same person you used to know.
